This May Shock Some of You!

So for the past, I don't know, 8 months or so, the economy has really been taking a toll with my job. And just for the record, Congress can take the almost 1 trillion dollar "recovery bill" and shove it! So, with the housing market the way it is and with businesses going under everyday, there have not been as many projects to work on. We get a ton of our projects from cities with capital improvement tax money. Well, when you don't have any new housing with impact fees and you are not drawing any new businesses, you don't have money for park projects and things like that and hence, work has been excruciatingly slow lately. In fact, we have layed off 6 people in the past few months and I count myself lucky that I still have my job. I predicted in October that I would be out on my rear end as of Feb. 1.

During this time I have had some very strong promptings to do some things. One of those things was to take an EMT class to aquire some new skills. For what, I don't know but it is emergency skills so thats kind of scary. I have loved every minute of it and will graduate on the 24th of this month and then I will start the EMT-Intermediate course in March.
While going through this EMT course I had some very interesting discussions with one of my instructors. It had to do with what I was going to do in the future and things of that nature. Well, after come discussing with my instructors, my wife (love you, Honey), and alot of praying I have decided to leave the field of Landscape Architecture. Not entirely, I will explain in a moment.

I am going back to school to become a nurse!

Thats right, a nurse. More specifically an ER Nurse. I am currently enrolled at Weber State for Fall Semester. There is a chance that I will be accepted to a school in Draper, but that is still pending. I will be taking 1 year to complete all my prereqs (suprisingly, landscape architecture doesn't require human anatomy- go figure) and then 2 yrs of nursing to get my RN.
I feel great and at peace with this decision for a number of reasons. 1- I will still use my landscape architecture degree. I am going to consult home owners, something I have wanted to do for a while. 2- I am and will be aquiring skills that will benifit my family and others. Not to mention I should ALWAYS have a job. 3- I will be making a difference in others lives.
So...Are you shocked?

That is so awesome Tyson! I am excited for you, and I have to say I would request you any day! don't get me wrong, I have just always admired your people skills and your caring and giving heart. Your family is so strong and with you at the head of it, it means only good can come to you. Thanks for always being such a great example to my family and loving Reagan back in the day when she was just a baby. She loved you like a 2nd daddy! You two really were such a strength to me in some rough times of me and Ryan's marriage.
Thanks for being our friends! Good Luck in school!
Jenny your an amazing supportive wife!

It's too bad that you won't be in Anatomy with Van DeGraff. He was an amazing instructor, and I am sure the school is still using his text book. It is THE book of the field. When Pete got to dental school, and they suggested the Van DeGraff book, they were floored to find out that he was Pete's instructor.

You will get lots of help in school, but call Pete if you need anatomy help. He aced it, and continued to ace it in dental school.
You know I am excited for you. I think you are making a wise decision, and your family will be blessed for it.

YAY Tyson!!!! I'm so excited for you guys! I graduate with my RN May 14th!!! :-) I'm on my last stretch! Nursing school is a butt kicker, it'll be good that you guys have lots of family around bc you're gonna need some help! But ya'll can do it.

I hope you're able to get into a program soon. Not to discourage you but it took me 2 years to get into one after getting all my pre-reqs done.

I'm excited! I love nursing! Wouldn't want to do anything else in the world.

Thais, are you at TCU? I have to tell you I love Texas! I served my mission in Houston and have visted Dalls and San Antonio. Where did you apply before you got in? Also, What department or are would you like to work in? I am 99.9% sure I would like to work in the ER. I have done some rotations for my EMT class in the ER and it is awesome.

Taylor. Congratulations. That's awesome you are going to do nursing, my little sister is trying to get into the program at Weber. Who knows you may meet her. I was a little worried about the LA not working out, that's why I became a full time mommy! Jenny you are looking so cute with your little belly. It's so exciting to hear you guys are doing great!

Tyson,

I am at an Associates program. After we got married we moved to TX from UT. I had all my ducks in a row to apply to Weber and DATC but we moved. With the move to Texas I wasn't able to go to an university bc of residency stuff (too pricey), so I went to the community college. I'm at Brookhaven College. I looked into applying for the BSN programs at TWU and UT Arlington. TCU is too far for me. And both school give priority to their own students, adding points to their GPA. They told me the average GPA is 3.9 to get into the program, there are only 100 spots, and 700 people on average apply. I had a 3.5 GPA. If one of their students had my same GPA they'd tackle .4 points to theirs, bringing their GPA up to 3.9. So with fees and all that I decided the odds were against me and I wasn't going to spend my time and money into applying there and would just do a bridge after I got my RN.

So I applied to the community college. I got denied first time, got an interview the second, but didn't get in the program, and the third time I got in. There were three programs in three different community colleges and I got into two of them. I stuck with Brookhaven because they were the best one.

I want to work in medical/surgical or telemetry. I went into it thinking I wanted to do ER, but I hate it. It makes me too anxious. lol Half of my class wants to do L&D, the other half wants to do ER/ICU. There's few of us that want to do med/surg. I love it. It goes along my CNA stuff of caring for the elderly. I love the elderly. All of my instructors really encourage med/surg for 6 mos to a year before going into any specialty. Med/surg is where you learn your basics and develop good critical thinking. But the recruiters have told us that if you have EMT/paramedic background to apply for ER. Most of the boys like ER. :-)

It really is a wonderful field. If you get sick of ER, you can do something else. I'd like to eventually do NICU, or get an NP in gerontology and stick with the elderly. I don't know for sure... it'll all depend on whether we can have kids or not.

Oh btw we live in a suburb of Dallas, northeast. We're about 25 minute from downtown Dallas. Ya'll should come visit us one of these times! I love Texas, I just wish it was a bit colder.

Please feel free to ask me as many questions as you need! I'm a pro at this school stuff. lol

I was thinking the same thing Pam was thinking: It's too bad Dr. Van DeGraff is gone! He was seriously the best! Human anatomy was seriously my favorite class in college because of him!

Good luck with everything! Keep us posted!

Awesome!!! My mom and sister are both in the nursing program at the DATC and they love it. You might want to check into their program, they work hand in hand with Weber but at a fraction of the cost. Good luck!
